Middlesbrough 1 Southampton 2: Rodriguez and Redmond end winless run

Jay Rodriguez scored one and assisted another as Southampton won 2-1 at relegated Middlesbrough to record their first victory in six games and move up to ninth in the Premier League.

Forward Rodriguez had not netted since January, but struck late in the first half to give Saints the early advantage.

And he set up half-time substitute Nathan Redmond to strike after the break, shortly before Shane Long struck the crossbar with a penalty.

Boro, playing their first match since their top-flight relegation was confirmed by defeat to Chelsea on Monday, got one back when Patrick Bamford headed in with 18 minutes remaining, the striker s first goal in over two years.

But there was no way back for the hosts who have now won just once in 20 league games as Saints bo…

Gill happy to help Infantino

Former Manchester United chief executive David Gill said he would be happy to help new FIFA president Gianni Infantino reform FIFA s finances.

Gill is widely recognised as the man responsible for helping transform United into the commercial giants they have become off the pitch and he has worked closely with Infantino at UEFA since leaving the club to take a spot on the body s executive committee in 2013.

Gill, 58, said: FIFA has got to rebuild.

I sit on UEFA s finance committee and had that role at the Premier League so I would be prepared to do it at FIFA.

FIFA s executive committee is set to be expanded to a 36-seat council following reforms passed as Infantino was elected president, succeeding Sepp Blatter as the world governing body looks to recov…

Inzaghi harbours regrets after Barca draw but hails Inter showing

Simone Inzaghi admitted he left Camp Nou feeling regretful but hailed Inter s performance at Barcelona as the Nerazzurri took a significant step to the Champions League knockout stages.

Robin Gosens seemed to have secured qualification for Inzaghi s visitors on Wednesday, scoring to make it 3-2 in the 89th minute, only for Robert Lewandowski to equalise three minutes later.

It was not the first time Inter had squandered the lead, though, having been pegged back earlier by Lewandowski after second-half goals from Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez followed Ousmane Dembele s 40th-minute opener.

Despite twice relinquishing the advantage, Inter need just one win from their last two games to progress from Group C, though Inzaghi wishes his side could have sealed qual…

City stumble as Gerrard rescues Liverpool in Europa League

Manchester City sank to defeat but a Steven Gerrard hat-trick gave Liverpool victory at home to Napoli in the Europa League on Thursday, as CSKA Moscow led a clutch of teams into the knockout phase.

Victory at Polish side Lech Poznan would have taken big-spending City into the next round, but despite dominating the early exchanges they fell behind in the 30th minute when Dimitrije Injac drove the ball home.

Emmanuel Adebayor, who scored a hat-trick in the reverse fixture two weeks ago, drew City level early in the second half when he lashed in the rebound after home goalkeeper Jasmin Buric saved his header.

There was a cruel sting in the tail for the visitors, however, as Lech restored their advantage four minutes from time.

The goal had a touch of the c…

Manchester United v Aston Villa: Van Gaal praise for Fellaini as Villa await inevitable

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has underlined his backing for much-maligned midfielder Marouane Fellaini ahead of relegation-doomed Aston Villa s visit to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.

Fellaini has often been cast as the poster boy for United s relative struggles since he joined the club in 2013 from Everton, following the end of Alex Ferguson s managerial tenure.

The Belgium international returned after almost a month on the sidelines for Wednesday s FA Cup quarter-final replay at West Ham and rewarded Van Gaal s faith in him by scoring what proved to be the winner in a 2-1 victory.

Van Gaal could augment the goal threat provided by teenage sensation Marcus Rashford with Wayne Rooney, after his captain returned to first-team action fo…

Zidane makes light of rookie status ahead of City showdown

Calm, smiling and careful to say no more than he absolutely had to, Zinedine Zidane spoke with the assurance of a managerial veteran in the bowels of the Etihad Stadium on Monday.

It was easy to forget the Real Madrid boss is in the fourth month of his first senior coaching post, as he batted away questions about his tactical approach for Tuesday s Champions League semi-final against Manchester City an opponent he praised warmly.

As arguably the finest player of his generation, whose mastery on the field helped him to every major honour worth claiming in football, Zidane knows how history can sometimes weigh on such occasions and how, in these terms, the deck is stacked in Madrid s favour.

This is the trophy 10-time winners Madrid crave above all others; the clu…

Tuchel: Coronavirus-stricken PSG should not expect too much against Lens

Thomas Tuchel is expecting a very difficult match against Lens in Paris Saint-Germain s Ligue 1 opener after a number of players tested positive for coronavirus.

Reigning champions PSG are without seven players for Thursday s clash at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, with Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria among their absentees.

The Champions League finalists have had less than three weeks off since ending their 2019-20 campaign and Tuchel admits it may take time for his side to find their rhythm.

It s a little weird to start with a very difficult match in Lens, he said at his pre-match news conference. Normally, after a final, we have a preparation phase with friendly matches.

But starting with a Ligue 1 match in Lens, it s going to be very hard. Fo…

Rumour Has It: Ancelotti to block Man Utd´s Richarlison bid

Manchester United may be eyeing Everton forward Richarlison, but Carlo Ancelotti has other ideas.

Brazil international Richarlison, 22, is reportedly among numerous attackers being targeted by United.

However, the arrival of Ancelotti at Goodison Park could mean Richarlison is going nowhere.
